Toxic benthic cyanobacteria in Bavarian lakes – distribution and identification of triggering environmental factors based on autecological studies (CyanoBenTox II)
Among toxin-producing cyanobacteria, benthic forms are becoming increasingly important worldwide alongside their pelagic representatives. The CyanoBenToxII project investigates the distribution and composition of benthic cyanobacteria in Bavarian lakes as well as the toxicity of these organisms. In addition to field sampling, cultivation experiments with in-house isolates are being conducted. The autecological studies are intended to supplement the field studies and clarify the influence of environmental factors on this group of organisms. In particular, stress factors caused by climate change are considered. The project is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Health, Care, and Prevention.
