Project Description – Doctoral Project SP13 "Plant Systems"
The doctoral project is part of the Research Training Group Urban Green Infrastructure (RTG UGI, TUM). The aim of Cluster 3 "Sustainable Urban Storm Water Management" is to provide multiple ecosystem services in urban areas — ranging from water regulation and pollutant retention to recreation and biodiversity aspects.
The doctoral project (SP13 "Plant Systems") investigates the local and landscape effects on the ecosystem services provided by infiltration swales. While many technical aspects of infiltration swales are well understood, knowledge gaps remain regarding the ecologically informed design and planning of such systems, particularly with respect to plant use. The work is structured into the following steps:
- Vegetation and soil analysis in Bavarian infiltration swales: At infiltration swales in several Bavarian cities, vegetation surveys are combined with soil sampling.
- Mesocosm experiment on copper retention: A controlled experimental approach examines how vegetation and substrate influence the retention and immobilisation of copper from building and traffic-area runoff in infiltration swales.
- Cluster project — interdisciplinary evaluation of existing swales in Munich: Existing infiltration swales within the city of Munich are assessed across disciplines with respect to water, soil, vegetation, insects and pollutants, in order to capture the status quo and derive starting points for ecologically optimised design.
- Synthesis: Based on the results, practice-oriented recommendations are derived for the ecologically informed design and planning of multifunctional infiltration swales.
