Objectives
Description

(2) Relative importance of the different aspects of diversity to the functioning of ecosystems
Numerous studies have addressed the importance of plant diversity to the functioning of ecosystems and provisioning of ecosystem services. However, we still need to unveil the patterns of scientific bias within this research area.
This study will review the trends in publications on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) and identify possible gaps and biases in the scientific knowledge on this topic. Therefore, the papers published 2000-2020 in 10 scientific journals containing the majority of studies on BEF will be analyzed to detect which aspects of biodiversity have been addressed to explain the functioning of ecosystems. We will assess the trends of BEF publications by quantifying the absolute and relative values of papers published considering a specific aspect of BEF in relation to the total number of BEF studies published in the respective year. Overall, the project will evaluate: i. numbers of papers considering different aspects of diversity over time; ii. numbers of papers assessing several response variables over time; iii. numbers of papers measuring response variables related to the use of resources, conversion of resources into biomass or other ecological processes. Additionally, we will investigate (iv.) how the aforementioned publication patterns vary depending on ecosystem type (e.g. whether aquatic, terrestrial or across both); (v). how publication patterns vary depending on the number of trophic levels considered in the study (whether single or multiple); (vi.) how publication patterns vary according to the community analyzed, or autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms; and (vii.) how publication patterns vary according to study type, space scale and time scale.

Kontakt: Dr. Thomas Wagner
