Preserving Alpine Trails and Huts in a Changing Climate
Duration: 2026-2029
Funding: Interreg Alpine Space, Co-Funded by the European Union

About
The Alpine space holds a unique cultural heritage shaped by centuries of human interaction with mountains. Around 700 Alpine huts and over 40,000 km of trails are testimonies of mountain culture & also vital infrastructure for tourism, recreation, & local identity. However, climate change threatens their physical integrity and accessibility in the coming decades, equiring transnational adaptation strategies.
AlpFuturePaths aims to safeguard this cultural heritage in a cross-sectoral approach by:
(i) anticipating alpine hazards, protection forest & biodiversity change
(ii) implementing nature-based & hybrid solutions at key huts & trails to mitigate risks
(iii) developing WebGIS and digital planning tool & integrating them into practices & policies.
By combining hazard forecasting, best practice examples, and strategic dissemination, AFP strengthens the resilience of Alpine huts & trails, enhances biodiversity, & sustains the cultural
economic value for future generations while operationalizing EU-level policies on nature-based solutions for local implementation.
This project is co-founded by the European Union through the Interreg Alpine Space programme. For further information about this project, plese refer to the project website here.
